Wood rot—the discoloration and decay of wood—is caused by fungi. These microscopic organisms thrive when wood has oxygen, temperatures between approximately 40°F and 100°F, and enough moisture. Mildew may discolor a surface, but it does not destroy the wood’s structure and should not be confused with structural decay.
Fungi that cause decay attack the wood’s structural cells. Moisture trapped within the wood creates a breeding ground, and strength can be lost quickly even when the early damage is difficult to see.
Fading luster, dull or discolored surfaces, a musty odor, softness, and sponginess can signal decay. Advanced rot may produce cracks across the grain, shrinkage, or stringy wood fibers.
Soft rot, brown rot, and white rot affect wood differently. The correct repair, replacement, or preservation strategy depends on the fungus, climate, moisture source, location, and application.
Preserving the original wood is not always possible. Reinforcing or filling damaged wood with epoxy alone will not stop continued decay when contaminated material and moisture remain.
